The Including Special Kids Program is a collaborative program with well-established community youth programs. It is an evidence-based, model after-school inclusion, learning, and socialization program embedded into recreational community settings
for youth with developmental disabilities, age 5-high-school graduates. The Including Special KidsProgram includes one-to-one assistive
staffing (Inclusion Assistants) to aid special needs children in navigating activities, peer relationships,
and learning opportunities in small and large groups. This program has received funding from San Andreas Regional Center,
The Bubel/Aiken Foundation, private donors, and materials/equipment contributions from Excelligence Learning Corporation.
The Including Special Kids Program is currently serving children with developmental disabilities at the Seaside
and Salinas Units of the Boys & Girls Club, the First Tee of Monterey County, Porter Youth Center, and now available at the Smythe Boys & Girls Club in San Jose.

Ability Awareness Training
Working collaboratively with the Monterey County SELPA (Special Education Local Plan Area), Special Kids Crusade offers
Ability Awareness trainings for local schools and community organizations. These unique trainings offer children and
adults the opportunity to experience first-hand what it might be like to have a wide range of disabilities. Each experiential
station provides every-day tasks and activities that individuals with disabilities find very challenging (e.g., buttoning
a shirt while your fingers are taped together or completing a written task with your non-dominant hand while faced with overwhelming
visual and auditory distractors). Children and adults gain new insight into the world of differing abilities, and come
away with new ideas and perspectives on how to work with, play with, and include special needs individuals in our community.
VIP Basketball Camp
In 2008, Special Kids Crusade assumed operation of VIP Basketball from the City of Pacific Grove Parks and Recreation
Department. VIP Basketball is a unique basketball program designed for players with disabilities who
would otherwise not be able to participate in a sports program. Players must be students age 5-18, or those who still qualify
for public education services. VIP Basketball is held on eight consecutive Saturdays between January and March at
the Seaside Boys & Girls Club Gymnasium. A low-cost registration fee of $30 includes a commemorative T-shirt, photo package
(individual and team photos), and an end-of-program party held on the last day of play.
